MANILA - An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale (SR), which hit the Philippines Monday, February 6, killing 43 people. In addition, the earthquake also triggered landslides that caused several houses were buried.
Since Monday, the victims of the earthquake are still being discovered by rescuers. Victims are generally found in a lifeless condition.
"Rescue teams are still yet to find signs of life," said Mayor Guihulngan, Ernesto Reyes told AFP on Wednesday (08/02/2012).
While the island of Negros military commander Colonel Francisco Patromonio said 48 people found the lifeless state of the quake. While 92 others were confirmed missing.
Reyes also added that the residents who live in the mountainous region Guihulngan, unknown buried up to 10 meters inside the debris. While the rescue effort itself is slow as people tried to find the victim without the use of heavy equipment.
Temporary access roads and bridges to Guihulngan gempat reported heavily damaged. "The concern we are to save the survivors. We do not have enough food and water no electricity," said Reyes.
"We asked for help from anyone," he said.
An earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude is indeed miserable people on the island of Negros. Until now the rescuers have not found 92 people were reported missing.
Other areas are also affected by the earthquake in the mountains is the village of La Libertad Solongon. Several people were reportedly trapped in the rubble of their homes in the area.
President Benigno Aquino III has ordered the Air Force and the Coast Guard to aid rescue efforts.
Earlier in 2004 also had an earthquake struck the island of Mindanao in southern Philippines. This disaster killed 78 people and could trigger an early warning related to the threat of tsunami waves.
