Outside the Aceh Earthquake Center Subduction Zone

Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has just announced that an earthquake rocked Aceh on Wednesday (4/11/2012) at 15:38 pm and a potential tsunami.

Eko Yulianto, experts Geotechnology Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), said that based on last observation was 8.7 magnitude earthquake.

The epicenter is on at 2:31 North Latitude (N), 92.67 East Longitude (BT), or about 146 Southwestern Simeulue in Aceh with a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

"The epicenter is about 500 km from Sumatra. Location outside the zone of subducted slabs or meeting," said Eko

Meanwhile, seismic experts from the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Irwan Meilano, said that the epicenter was on the west side of the subduction zone, away from the scene that is mainland Sumatra.

With a distance of 500 km of the epicenter, the tsunami if it occurs, the tsunami will arrive in less than 1 hour. Time interval until the publication of news of the quake is already more than 1 hour. Until now, the situation in Aceh is not known.

Eko urged the Acehnese people to remain vigilant and immediately evacuate the area by going to higher ground. Unknown magnitude of possible tsunami.
